The traditional features of the Guernsey (pronounced ‘gan-zee’) make this a perfect sweater for kids. The easy-fitting smock shape and comfortable drop-shoulder give the wearer a wonderful freedom of movement. The original Staithes Guernsey is on permanent display in the Victoria & Albert museum in London, U.K.
Staithes is worked on #6 circular needles. The body is in Plain Knit, the yokes and upper sleeves are decorated with Double Seed Stitch panels separated with bands of ridges (Ridge & Furrow), and the bottom cuff is in Ridge & Furrow. These simple yet elegant stitches make this an easy design for the intermediate knitter.Another endearing Guernsey feature is that when your knitting is done, your sweater is done – not a single seam. Traditionally Guernseys were knit in fine, smooth wool yarns, usually grey/blue, dark blue or black, and worked on small needles, which compacted the yarn and created a dense fabric. The stitches and traditional details of this sweater show best when knit with smooth-spun yarns similar to the wools used for the original ganzees.
