A couple of years ago I came across this lovely old Shetland border stitch, Clematis. I promptly used the basic stitch in two different designs ( Clematis and Niobe). I thought that I was long done with this border, but it had other plans for me. The current result is this crescent-shaped scarf/shoulder shawl. In case you were wondering, Cirrhosa (pronounced sir-ROH-suh) is a variety of the delicate clematis vine that originally inspired the border. The lacy edging is knit first. It grows from a cast on of just a few stitches, the length is knit, then the total number of stitches is decreased again, stitches are picked up along the right side, then short rows are used to shape it into a crescent.

Yarn: fingering weight; 335, 383 [450, 510] yards
Gauge: 20 sts and 22 rows to 4 inches (10 cm) in lace pattern, blocked
Needles: US 5 (3.75 mm) needles, or size needed to get gauge
Crochet hooks: US F (3.75 mm) hook for provisional cast on
Finished size: 53 x 10, 61 x 10 [69 x 10.5, 76 x 11] inches; 132.5 x 25.5, 155 x 25.5 [175 x 26.5, 193 x 28] cm
Notions: Approximately 1 yard smooth waste yarn (fingering weight) in a contrasting color for provisional cast on; stitch markers optional, yarn needle
